A fine London pair-cased verge pocket watch with half quarter repeater and early cylinder escapement Movm. No. 8340, Case No. 8340, Dimensions 49 mm, circa 1776, Weight 140 g, Origin England Case: Outer case - 18 K gold, lavishly engraved and openworked at the edge, case maker's punch mark "MR". Inner case - 18 K gold, openworked edge and lavishly engraved with floral motifs, rear bell. Dial: Enamel. Movm.: Full plate movement, chain/fusee, 2 hammers, three-arm steel balance. The golden outer case is decorated with engraved palm branches and ribbons, while the centre features an engraved amphora within an oval medallion on a guilloché background. The edge on the front and back is decorated with a geometric, openwork decorative band. The inner case, made of gold, is artfully engraved with acanthus, flowers, a shell and a mascaron, and is partially openworked at the edge. Provenance: Lukas Stolberg collection. This watch is illustrated and described in his book "Ich trage, wo ich gehe, stets eine Uhr bei mir. Die Taschenuhr im Wandel der Zeit" (I always carry a watch with me wherever I go. The pocket watch through the ages), Klagenfurt 1980, p. 68. John Cowell is recorded as being active as a clockmaker in London (Royal Exchange) in the late 18th century.
