A rare, single-handed Geneva "Oignon" with enamel portrait of a distinguished lady on the balance bridge Dimensions 57 mm, circa 1690, Weight 154 g, Origin Schweiz Case: Copper, firegilt, leather-covered, the reverse side with glazed, round cut-out. This is a typical example of an "oignon" - a large watch fitted with a simple construction and easily readable dial. Provenance: Lukas Stolberg collection. This watch is illustrated and described in his book "Ich trage, wo ich gehe, stets eine Uhr bei mir. Die Taschenuhr im Wandel der Zeit" (I always carry a watch with me wherever I go. The pocket watch through the ages), Klagenfurt 1980, p. 29. In Osvaldo Patrizzi's ‘Dictionnaire des Horlogers Genevois’, Domaine Burdet is listed as the son of Isaac Burdet in Geneva. Around 1685, Domaine Burdet was trained as a watchmaker by the Geneva master watchmaker François Mallet. Mallet was originally from Rouen.
