Born in 1786 as Sumida Shōzō in Edo (present-day Tokyo) as the son of a cloth merchant, he began an apprenticeship with Utagawa Toyokuni I at the age of 15, adopted the artist name Gototei Kunisada in 1801, specialized in Yakusha-e (actor portraits), Bijin-ga (beauty portraits), and book illustrations, was a leading figure in the Kunisada school from 1820 onward, and produced over 20,000 prints, including the Genji Monogatari series (1820s) and triptychs on Kabuki theater. He died on January 12, 1865. Kunisada created colorful, detailed woodblock prints with elegant figures, fashionable clothing, and dramatic poses, defining the Ōnin style of the 1830s with its thick outlines and metallic pigments. He illustrated over 200 books (e.g., "Chūshingura").
