A cast bronze head of buddha Thailand, Ayutthaya style, 16th century Height: 32 cm (12.60 in) Cast and Patinated Bronze The face features a curvilinear contour with the hairline extending toward the sinuous eyebrow line, accentuated by elongated ears flared at the top and bottom. The lips are sensitively modeled into a subtle smile, and the hair is tightly curled in deep relief over the prominent ushnisha. The inlaid eyes, stretching evenly across the face’s width, are three-quarters closed.Between the 14th and 16th centuries, Thailand’s Ayutthaya Kingdom became one of the most powerful entities in Southeast Asia. Building upon the artistic traditions established during the Sukhothai era, theTheravada rulers endorsed the crafting of Buddha figures in a novel and distinct style. These sculptures are distinguished by faces with curvilinear contours and a lowered hairline approaching a wavy brow line, complemented by elongated ears that flare at both the top and bottom. The eyes, spread evenly across the face’s width and mostly closed, impart a calm and meditative quality to the figures, reflecting both inner tranquility and a connection to the outer world.
