Khmer Sandstone Torso of a Standing Female Deity (Devata) Cambodia (Khmer Empire) 10th–13th Century, Pre-Angkor to Angkor Period Height: 31 cm (≈ 12.2 in) Width: 20 cm (≈ 7.9 in) Depth: 7 cm (≈ 2.8 in) Carved sandstone This elegant sandstone fragment is a compelling example of Khmer figurative sculpture, likely representing a celestial nymph (Apsara) or a benevolent female deity (Devata) that would have adorned the walls or gateways of a temple complex within the Khmer Empire. The torso depicts the idealized slender body of a standing female divinity, rendered with the characteristic sensuality and stylistic restraint of the Khmer aesthetic: The figure is draped in a long sampot (skirt-like garment) that falls gracefully to the ankles. The fabric is tightly fitted, revealing the form of the legs beneath. A key stylistic detail is the discernible central pleat (or fold of the cloth) that runs down the front, providing vertical emphasis and identifying the garment type. The upper torso is bare, a conventional representation for Devatas, emphasizing the soft, idealized modeling of the chest and shoulders. T he high, taut neckline suggests the presence of a delicate torque or necklace (now absent). The posture is subtly naturalistic, suggesting the deity once stood in a tranquil, frontal pose, common for the figures supporting the celestial realm. The sculpture is carved from sandstone, the primary building and sculpting material used throughout the Angkor period. The porous stone displays a buff or light reddish-brown colour and an earthy texture. The fragment is mounted on a modern, dark rectangular stand for stability and display. (Height: 31 cm (≈ 12.2 in) Width: 20 cm (≈ 7.9 in) Depth: 7 cm (≈ 2.8 in)) European private collection This is a torso fragment. The head, neck, lower legs, and arms are missing. The surviving stone is stable, with overall wear and weathering consistent with centuries of exposure in a tropical climate and subsequent detachment from a larger temple structure.
