작품 상세

Autograph Letter Signed (“Paul Cezanne”), 2 pp recto and verso, 8vo (with integral blank), Pontoise, May 16, 1888, to Monsieur Chocquet, mentioning Pissaro, some staining at hinge, small cut at right center margin. Together with Autograph Letter Signed (“Hortense Cezanne”) of Cezanne’s widow, 4 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoining leaves), Emagny, August 1, n.y., to Madame Chocquet, on black-bordered mourning stationery, written while traveling with Paul Jr, light toning, otherwise fine. Cezanne writes this letter to Victor Chocquet, a government employee of modest means who was a passionate collector of the Impressionists long before the public acknowledged their merit. Both Cezanne and Renoir painted his portrait many times. In this letter, Cezanne mentions his mentor Pissaro, who has brought news of Chocquet to the artist, and also his wife and son Paul. The Choquet family remained close with Cezanne’s family after his death, as evidenced by Madame Cezanne’s warm letter to the family. See illustration.
