London, May 30, 1866. An unidentified four-measure quotation marked “Andante.” In fine condition. SARASATE, PABLO DE. (1844-1908). Spanish violinist and composer; one of the leading virtuosi of his time. CS. (“Pablo de Sarasate”). 1p. Oblong 8vo. N.p. May 6, 1890. A bold signature written in indelible pencil on a sheet of paper affixed to a larger sheet. In fine condition. SAURET, EMILE. (1852-1920). French violinist best remembered for his cadenza for the first movement of Paganini’s First Violin Concerto. ANS. (“Emile Sauret”). 1p. Oblong 32mo. “With best compliments... London, March 29, 1910.” The 1744 Guarneri violin Sauret played was acquired by violinist Itzhak Perlman in 1986. In very fine condition. SEVCIK, OTAKAR. (1852-1934). Czech violinist and pedagogue who taught at the Imperial Royal Academy of Music in Vienna. AMusQS. (“Prof. Ot. Sevcik”). 1p. Oblong 16mo. N.p., N.d. A four-measure quotation from the sixth of his “Six Dances and Airs,” Opus 10, entitled “Furiant.” which was dedicated to compatriot and fellow violinist, Jan Kubelik. In fine condition. SINGER, EDMUND. (1830-1912). Hungarian violinist and composer; childhood friend of Joseph Joachim. AMusQS. (“Edmund Singer”). 2pp. Oblong 8vo. Vienna, January 7, 1853. Eight double measures and 10 triple measures from an unidentified composition for piano quartet inscribed to Louis Engel on a colorfully decorated album leaf. In excellent condition. SPAGNOLETTI (PAOLO LUDOVICO DELLA DIANA; 1765-1834). Italian violinist who, following his return to his homeland after serving as violinist to the Spanish court, was nicknamed “lo spagnoletto,” the “little Spaniard,” which later became “Spagnoletti.” A founding member of London’s Philharmonic Society, Paganini requested that Spagnoletti act as concertmaster during all of his 1831 London concerts. Autographed embossed visiting card consisting of his signature (“Mr. Spagnoletti”) and his handwritten address. Age discoloration otherwise fine. Scarce. THOMSON, CESAR. (1857-1931). Belgian violinist and composer. He was student of Wieniawski and Vieuxtemps and later taught at NY’s Ithaca College and the Juilliard School. SP. (“Cesar Thomson”). 1p. Postcard. Brussels, 1909. A fine pose showing Thomson with his violin tucked under his right arm. Some silvering and poor contrast where Thomson has written the place and date; otherwise fine. TOLBECQUE, CHARLES. (1806-1835). Belgian violinist and conductor; pupil of Rodolphe Kreutzer. ALS. (“Ch. Tolbecque”). ½p. Small 4to. N.p., N.d. A brief note written on a sheet of paper watermarked 1831 and mounted to a larger sheet. He informs his correspondent that his concert fees are two guineas per performance. Rare; Tolbeque died at the age of 29. Folds and the ink slightly light. [specialstring]
