Portsmouth, 1679. Legal document signed by Joseph Dudley (1647-1720), who had a leading role in the colonial Dominion of New England and later became Governor of Massachusetts. The present document is a deposition apparently related to boundaries for a parcel of land. 1679 was an important year for Portsmouth, as the settlement was officially separated from Massachusetts and established as the capital of the new royal Province of New Hampshire.
