A LETTER INVITING ADMIRAL POLE TO BE A PALLBEARER AT NELSON’S FUNERAL A LETTER INVITING ADMIRAL POLE TO BE A PALLBEARER AT NELSON’S FUNERAL an autograph signed letter from William Marsden, Secretary to the Admiralty, and dated 24 December 1805 to Admiral Sir Charles Pole, inviting him to be one of the pall bearers at the forthcoming funeral of Lord Nelson, 1½ pp. -- 12 x 9½in. (31 x 19.6cm) Although Nelson had died on 21 October at Trafalgar news of his death did not reach London until 5 November. The Victory bearing the Admiral’s body anchored at Spithead, off Portsmouth, on 5 December, and the immense state funeral took place at St Paul’s Cathedral on 9 January 1806. Admiral Pole was an old friend of Nelson’s and was of the six who met the coffin, borne by twelve men of the Victory.
