Charles Lindbergh made the first non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in the Spirit of St. Louis from Long Island, New York, to Le Bourget, near Paris, on May 20–21, 1927. His flight was sponsored by a group of businessmen in St. Louis, Missouri, and named his single-seat, single-engine monoplane "Spirit of St. Louis" in honor of his supporters from the St. Louis Racquet Club in his then-hometown. Lindbergh, a 25-year-old U.S. Air Mail pilot at the time, emerged from virtual obscurity to almost instantaneous world fame as the result of his flight, a distance of nearly 3,600 statute miles. A U.S. Army reserve officer, "Lindy" was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his aviation exploits. In 1929–1931, Lindbergh carried small groups of souvenir covers on the first flights over routes in Latin America and the Caribbean, which he had earlier laid out as a consultant to Pan American Airways to be then flown under contract to the Post Office as Foreign Air Mail (FAM) routes 5 and 6. The envelope presented here is one such cover, commemorating the first day of mail service carried by Colonel Charles Lindbergh on the New York to Panama route.
