US Army Caravan Photo, 1919. In July, 1919, after the Great War had ended, General John J. Pershing dispatched a convoy of 79 vehicles of every size then in use by the US Army. The caravan included trucks, staff cars, tractors, motorcycles, fuel trucks, ambulances, field kitchens, one Packard and much more. Also sent was a young lieutenant named Dwight D. Eisenhower. The convoy of army vehicles traveled across the country to demonstrate the military's capacity for quick movement. If Pershing hoped to dramatize the woeful state of the western state's roads, the demonstration succeeded. The caravan spent sixty-two days crossing the continent from east to west. This is an original 6.5x9-inch photograph, mounted on cardstock, of part of the caravan with a very large mine dump, perhaps near Ruth, Nevada, in the background. There is writing on the mount at the bottom: "auto tour from New York" ^ Date: 1919 Country (if not USA): State: Nevada City: Ruth Provenance: Douglas McDonald Collection
