Shabraques weredecorative horse blankets worn over the saddle, primarily by high-ranking officers and cavalry, to display rank and unit. They were typically made of wool with leather reinforcements and trim and were distinct from the standard saddle blanket worn underneath. Leather reinforcement at areas of high usage. Civil War Shabraques wereceremonial saddlecloths worn over saddles by officers, not for battle. They were elaborate and often decorated with a unit & colors, braid, or insignia, and were based on 18th-century European cavalry traditions. This one is made of dark blue wool felt with a backing of a canvas type material. The red/orange trim is also of wool felt. Ex: Virginia History Museum display. We ship what we sell. While the shabraque itself was for show, a simpler saddlecloth would be used under the saddle during active duty. The style was derived from the 18th-century hussar cavalry of Central Europe, which was widely copied by European armies.
