Solid wood Belaying Pin, 11” x 2-1/2” diameter at the middle, smooth from wear. VG. During the Civil War, a belaying pin was a wooden or metal rod used on sailing ships to secure ropes. These pins were inserted into pinrails along the ship's bulwarks or mast bases to manage the lines of the rigging. In hand-to-hand combat, the removable pins served as impromptu weapons due to their solid, heavy design.
