The battle of Iwo Jima, fought over five weeks in February and March 1945 between troops from the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy and the Imperial Japanese Army, resulted in the deaths of over 18,000 men from both sides of the conflict. The photograph of a group of six American marines hoisting the U.S. flag on Mt Suribachi, taken by Joe Rosenthal of Associated Press on 23 February 1945, remains one of the most poignant images of the 20th century
