작품 상세
An Ottoman kilij of classic form with a deeply curved single-edged blade forged of wootz Damascus steel. The watered pattern is visible throughout the length of the blade. The surface is enriched with silver-inlaid inscriptions and talismanic symbols including stars crescents rosettes and protective motifs that were believed to offer spiritual power in battle. Among these inscriptions appears the signature "Muhammad", a name commonly used on Ottoman religious or talismanic blades either as an invocation or as the name of a respected swordsmith. The lower section of the blade bears a large inlaid talismanic roundel composed of spiral and geometric devices. The spine and fuller area are decorated with repeating silver inlaid droplets crescents and rosettes. The sword retains its traditional brass crossguard with ovoid quillons and its horn pistol-grip hilt with a carved eared pommel and small eyelet. This form of hilt and guard combination is characteristic of Ottoman sabers produced for high-ranking cavalry and ceremonial use in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
