A 19th century Ottoman Janissary yataghan with the characteristic eared hilt composed of two carved bone grip-plates fastened to the tang by three steel rivets. The midrib of the grip is comprised of steel decorated with chased floral motifs. The single-edged, recurved blade has two narrow fullers and is decorated brilliantly with gold-inlaid inscriptions at the center on each side, as well as gold patterning around the guard. The Arabic inscription reads as follows: Made by haji (pligrim) Shareef Agha, Owner Halil (Khaleel) 1255 (Circa Greg. 1839) İnscription: عمل الحاج الشريف آغا صاحب خليل 1255. The scabbard is comprised of wood wrapped in stitched brown leather with vertical ribs. Ottoman Turkey, 19th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
