작품 상세
A finely made Ottoman Turkish shamshir with a deeply curved single-edged blade forged from wootz steel. The blade is of elegant, slender profile, strongly curved and tapering evenly to a sharp point, characteristic of 19th-century Ottoman cavalry and officer-grade edged weapons. The hilt is fitted with a carved grip of the pistol form with a rounded pommel, secured by rivets and decorative metal pins, including a rosette stud, mounted to a gilt-brass crossguard with gently downturned quillons terminating in faceted knop ends. The guard exhibits age patina and retains its original profile, unaltered by later modifications. The sword is preserved with its matching cloth-covered wooden scabbard, fitted with finely engraved and chased silver mounts comprising the locket, middle fitting, and chape. The silver mounts are decorated throughout with repeating oval medallions enclosing stylized foliate motifs, bordered by punched beading and framing bands, executed with the careful hand engraving typical of Ottoman silverwork of the period. Two suspension rings are mounted to the locket and the middle band for belt wear. The scabbard covering shows honest wear, abrasions, and areas of darkened patina, while the silver fittings retain a uniform, undisturbed surface consistent with age. Ottoman Empire, 19th century.
