Antique Printers Ink Roller in Wood Case. The roller is 14” x 2” diameter, afixed to a frame with wooden handle. The tool is contained in a two piece hinged custom box. The box has chiseled elipticals where the Roller and the handle rest. The handle actually extends beyond the box providing a carry handle. There is a stenciled ID, “Ben. Day Inc. N.Y., nd. This type of printer’s roller was used to apply ink to wood-cut engravings before they were letter pressed. Benjamin Henry Day Jr. (1838-1916) was an American illustrator and printer, best known for his invention of Ben-Day dots. Benday (or Ben-Day) refers to a printing process, named after printer Benjamin Day, that adds tone, shading, or texture to images using patterns of dots, lines, or other shapes, commonly seen in old comic books and newspapers to create grayscale effects or colors without full color printing.
