§ Paul Rebeyrolle (French, 1926-2005) Two White Turkeys signed lower right "Rebeyrolle" oil and mixed media on canvas h:161 w: 64 cm Provenance: Marlborough Fine Art, 17-18 Old Bond Street, London, W1, Paul Rebeyrolle Exhibition, 1953, No.23 (gallery label refers), where purchased by the vendor's late father-in-law. Paul Rebeyrolle had a rural upbringing in his native France. His interest in art started with ceramics painting, learning in his spare time. 1944 saw him move to Paris to study at the Grande Chaumière, where he studied under Bernard Lorjou, and was influenced by the likes of Picasso and Soutine. His first solo show was held in Paris in 1951, with his work focusing on domestic and rural life, but with an edge of violence throughout; using earthy tone and a bold characterisation of his subjects' faces and bodies. His later work saw a move through the Baroque style, to a more painterly focus; giving the attention of the work to the materials rather than subject matter, and including collage and found materials within the painting, such as newspaper, feathers and sand. His museum, "Espace Paul Rebeyrolle" is located near his home town of Eymoutiers.
