His works from the 1960s have been sold for up to 200,000 Euros at international auctions. Auctionata achieved a record-price for works by the artist of this format with the sale of two paintings in April The present wall object is an early work of the Italian artist Agostino Bonalumi, whose pieces of the 1960s were among the most important contemporary art positions in Italy. At that time, Bonalumi had already joined the ZERO group, whose representatives searched for alternatives to the well-established values in art. Works by the ZERO artists were therefore situated somewhere between sculpture and painting and characterized by a minimalist aesthetic. The present work is special within Bonalumi's oeuvre. It differs from the monochrome color surfaces on haptic image substrates which he is most commonly known for. The piece is titled 'Un fiore dei giardini di Rabat' ('A Flower from the Gardens of Rabat') and dates to the year 1967, when Bonalumi was in Morocco due to an art project. It was during this time that the artist also visited the capital Rabat and its beautiful embassy's district 'Souissi' which is conceived as a 'garden city' and may have served as a source of inspiration, here. The work was made by Bonalumi as a present for the original owner, a close friend. The signature of only his shortened name 'Tino' also testifies to the close friendship between the artist and the owner. This work can therefore be seen as very personal. The work is overall in a good condition considering its age. The corners are affected by tiny losses of paint and the upper edge of the canvas is slightly dirty. The color surface shows a fine craquelure lower right and a pale scratch mark upper left at the height of the flower. There are also two small glossy stains lower left and light traces of dust above the flower. The blossom itself shows a few skips and some scattered marks with some material losses. The work is verso titled with pen 'Un fiore dei giardini di Rabat' as well as signed and dated 'Tino. Aprile 67'. The overall dimensions are 22 x 20.5 x 8.5 cm (height x width x depth). Agostino Bonalumi (1935-2013) Agostino Bonalumi's apprenticeship began with a training as a draftsman at the 'Istituto Tecnico Industriale' in Vimercate near Milan. Between 1957 and 1958, he visited the studio of Enrico Baj in Milan. There he met Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, with whom he exhibited several times, as well as founding the magazine and gallery 'Azimuth'. Influenced by Lucio Fontana and the informel art, he mainly created reliefs and three-dimensional spatial arrangements. In 1960, the founders of the Azimuth gallery separated, and Bonalumi and Manzoni joined the 'ZERO' group. The following year, Bonalumi was a co-founder of the group 'Nouvelle École Européenne' in Lausanne. Since 1970, the artist also worked as a stage and costume designer for various theaters in Italy. Bonalumi has participated in a number of national and international exhibitions and biennials. His works are on display in major museum collections, including the Galleria Nazionale d' Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, and the Walker Art Center in Minnesota.
