On the verso there are narrow remains of adhesive from a previous mounting along the left and right margin. The sheet is signed in blue ‘Lois Pregartbauer’ lower right. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 61 x 75.5 cm, the sheet measures 49.7 x 64.4 cm. Lois Pregartbauer (1899-1971) Lois Pregartbauer was born in Styria. He is essentially considered a self-taught artist, but has attended the Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Applied Arts in Vienna as a student of Oskar Strnad. Pregartbauer was member of the Hagenbund, the Künstlerhaus and the Secession, which three of the most significant Viennese artists' associations at the time. He participated in the world exposition 1935 in Brussels and the first Biennale in Sao Paulo in 1951. In addition, he was honored with several awards. Stylistically Pregartbauer’s oeuvre is not easy to classify. Remaining committed to the figurative painting, his works were influenced by the New Objectivity in the early 1930s as well as constructivist tendencies after 1945. To this day the artist is regarded as a master of pastel. Works by Pregartbauer are held in Vienna in the Belvedere, the Albertina and the Leopold Museum as well as the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Museum of the city of Mannheim.
