Alexander Bortnyik (1893-1976) Following his studies at the Freie Kunstschule in Budapest, Alexander Bortnyik establishes contacts to the magazine ‘A Tett’ and via Lajos Kassák to the group ‘MA’, and advanced tho its most important representative. In 1919 he emigrated to Vienna. Three years later he exhibited his works in the Berlin Gallery ‘Der Sturm’. His work is influenced by French Cubism and German expressionism. In 1928 he founded following his return to Budapest, the school for promotional graphics, along the lines of the Weimar Bauhaus. In its two-dimensional structured posters the constructivist abstract picture type and the form design of the ‘new typography’ become important. In these years, Budapest becomes a centre of avant-garde poster art, also with assistance of Bortnyik. After the Second World War, Bortnyiks works are rather oriented in a satirical style to socialist realism. Between 1948 and 1949, he is teacher at the college for advanced arts and until 1959 he is acting director of the college of fine arts and below. In his late period Bortnyik returns to the art of the early years. (bde) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
