작품 상세

VINCENT D. SMITH (1929 - 2003) Untitled (Brownstone Stairs). Oil and sand with collage on linen canvas, 1968. 864x711mm; 34x28 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right. Provenance: Sheldon Ross Gallery, Birmingham, MI; Dr. Clarence P. Rogers, Detroit, MI; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, Michigan (2006). This significant Vincent Smith canvas shows how this expressive artist powerfully depicted the urban struggles of African-Americans. It also shows his fascinating introduction of collage elements into his late 1960s paintings. Here Smith uses the windows and stairs of a brownstone facade to compose one of his nocturnal scenes, with densely painted surfaces and paper collaged figures in each window.
