• BRYAN INGHAM (1936-1997) UNTITLED - ABSTRACT stamped on the backboard with studio stamp oil and collage on artist's prepared board 19.0 x 5.0cm / 7 1/2 x 2in Ingham was predominantly a painter, etcher and sculptor, though his work extended into the media of collage and assemblage. After serving in the RAF, he studied at St Martin's School of Art before embarking upon a post-graduate course at the Royal College of Art, where he was awarded a scholarship and first produced his idiosyncratic large and deeply gouged etchings. After extensive travelling in Italy (spending time in the studio of Barbara Hepworth), Ingham opted to move to Cornwall, where became a key figure in the 2nd generation of St Ives artists. In Cornwall, he shunned the competitiveness of the art world, preferring in the early days to teach periodically at Farnham and later on to hold court in his studio to a discerning handful of loyal collectors. Only in the late 1980s he started to appreciate that his paintings and, latterly, his sculptures were seen by a wider public. Thanks to the support of the growing band of collectors, Ingham explored new European landscapes, spending time in Barcelona, Tuscany, Berlin, Paris and Malta. His works engage with the crucial period of Cubism from 1912-16 and the work of Picasso, Braque and Gris in particular, however he had a broad variety of interests and influences throughout his career.
