HOM NGUYEN (France, 1972). Untitled. Mixed media on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 79 x 59 cm; 83 x 63 cm (frame). More than portraits, the figures that the Vietnamese Hom Nguyen represents mixing waxes, inks and charcoal are anonymous, like generic portraits. They convey the pulse of existence, the fleetingness of a life, the duality between the visible and the invisible of human nature. With his genuine gestures, using a stroke that is both meditated and impulsive, he delves into the primal pulse of emotions and memory. Hom Nguyen is a French painter of Vietnamese origin. His works are mainly figurative portraits. He lives and works in Paris. Hom Nguyen is a self-taught artist and never received drawing lessons. His painting is figurative. He started painting large portraits of celebrities, and from there he created more personal works of women and children, echoes of his past. He creates his works on canvas in different media, pencil, pastel, Indian ink, charcoal, acrylic and oil. On the occasion of the 2016 edition of the Paris Contemporary Art Fair, organized at the Grand Palais in Paris, his work was exhibited to the President of the Republic François Hollande. His work on the representation of the human figure was presented in multiple solo and group exhibitions around the world through international contemporary art fairs. In the Bangkok Post, Hom Nguyen states that he is the bearer of a dual Western and Eastern culture, and works to open a broader cultural platform. In 2019, in collaboration with the La Monnaie museum in Paris and Vogue magazine, he painted a portrait of Michelle Obama. The work was auctioned by Christie's and the funds raised were pledged to be donated to support gender equality and women's empowerment, led by United Nations Women. That same year she donated a portrait of Édith Piaf to be displayed at the entrance of the Meyniel wing of the Tenon Hospital, where Piaf was born in 1915. In December 2021, the Musée de l'Homme addressed the issue of the underrepresentation of people of diversity in the public space. Hom Nguyen created, for the Portraits de France exhibition, a work representing Aimé Césaire. In May 2022, the artist donated a work to the Hôtel National des Invalides to support wounded soldiers and bereaved families of all armies.
