April 1894 in Denham in der Grafschaft Buckinghamshire geboren. Von 1938 bis 1951 war er in zweiter Ehe mit der Künstlerin Barbara Hepworth verheiratet. Nicholson zählt zu den einflussreichsten und radikalsten britischen Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts und gilt als bedeutender Zeichner. Er ist bekannt für seine Fähigkeit, die Natur zu synthetisieren und zu abstrahieren und sie in Kompositionen von äusserster Eleganz und Klarheit umzugestalten. Unser Werk mit dem Titel "August, Cantabria" entstand wohl im Zusammenhang mit einer Reise des Künstlers im Sommer 1955 in die autonome Region Kantabrien an der Nordküste Spaniens. Die Hauptstadt Santander liegt am Golf von Biskaya. Vermutlich ist das Bild eine Reminiszenz an die eindrucksvolle bewaldete Gebirgslandschaft und an den Nationalpark "Picos de Europa". Die Verwendung von rechteckigen Flächen, strengen Linien und Kreisen spiegeln das hervorragende Gefühl des Künstlers für Rhythmus wider. Unser Werk stellt ein imposantes Relief dar und zählt zu den eindrucksvollen Arbeiten des Künstlers aus den 1950-Jahren. 1954 - im Jahr vor der Entstehung unseres Werkes - vertrat Nicholson Grossbritannien bei der Biennale in Venedig. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war er bereits ein international weit beachteter Künstler. Ben Nicholson was born on 10 April 1894 in Denham, Buckinghamshire. From 1938 to 1951, he was married for the second time to the artist Barbara Hepworth. Nicholson is regarded as one of the most influential and radical British artists of the 20th century and is considered an important draughtsman. He is known for his ability to synthesise and abstract nature, transforming it into compositions of the utmost elegance and clarity. Our work, entitled 'August, Cantabria', was probably created in connection with a trip the artist took to the autonomous region of Cantabria on the north coast of Spain in the summer of 1955. The capital, Santander, lies on the Bay of Biscay. Presumably, the painting is a reminiscence of the impressive forested mountain landscape and the 'Picos de Europa' National Park. The use of rectangular planes, strict lines and circles reflects the artist's outstanding sense of rhythm. Our work is an imposing relief and ranks among the artist's impressive works from the 1950s. In 1954, the year before our work was created, Nicholson represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale. By that time, he was already an internationally acclaimed artist.
