Born in Munich in 1889 as an illegitimate child, he completed a baker's apprenticeship in Passau from 1902 to 1905, traveled through northern Germany as a migrant worker, studied painting autodidactically, settled in Berlin in 1915, debuted in 1916 at Herwarth Walden's gallery Der Sturm, married the painter Maria Uhden in 1917, moved back to Munich, participated in the Bavarian Soviet Republic in 1919, taught at the Munich School of Applied Arts from 1926 to 1933, and received a professorship in Berlin in 1933, from which he was dismissed in 1937 as a "degenerate artist." Schrimpf painted Italian landscapes, portraits of girls, and still lifes with clear contours, a smooth brushwork style, and neoclassical purity, influenced by the Italian Renaissance, Biedermeier, and anti-realist modernism; oil paintings, woodcuts, and watercolors with a geometric formal language and harmonious composition.
