Herwig Zens* (Himberg 1943 - 2019 Vienna) Compoisition mixed media/paper 65,5 x 49,5 cm signed Hedwig, numbered 2/14 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 100 - 200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 100 Herwig Zens (Himberg 1943 – 2019 Vienna) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, and art educator of the Viennese post-war modernism movement, specializing in abstract painting, collage, and experimental techniques. Born in 1943 in Himberg near Vienna, the son of a farmer, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1963 to 1969 under Wolfgang Hutter and Oswald Oberhuber. From 1975 onward, he participated in exhibitions of the Vienna Secession, and from 1980 he worked as a freelance artist in Vienna. From 1990, he taught as a professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and continued to create large-scale installations and mixed-media works until his death. Zens painted dynamic color fields, gestural abstractions, and material assemblages with spontaneous brushstrokes, textured surfaces, and color intensity, influenced by the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, Viennese Actionism, and international Informel. Acrylic and oil paintings, collages, and objects characterized by process-oriented freedom and spatial tension.
