Born in Hopfgarten im Brixental in 1927, he completed an apprenticeship as a church and decorative painter with Toni Kirchmayr in Innsbruck before moving to Vienna with Ludwig Neuhauser in 1947 and studying at the Academy of Fine Arts under Sergius Pauser and Herbert Boeckl. He graduated in 1952 with a diploma and master class prize. Working as a freelancer in Vienna from 1952 onwards, he initially financed himself by copying old masters, became a member of the Künstlerhaus (vice-president from the 1970s) and travelled to Europe, Asia, Africa and the USA. Bucher addressed the theme of endangered humanity in dramatic, collage-like compositions and atmospheric landscapes with a focus on mood rather than naturalism; exhibitions in Vienna (MAK 1971, Secession 1981), Hopfgarten and Museum Kitzbühel.
