ELBRIDGE AYER BURBANK (American, 1858 - 1949) Chief Geronimo, Apache c. 1899 red conte crayon on paper, signed lower right, E.A. Burbank, Fort Sill, Oklahoma Territory, framed E. A. Burbank is believed to be the only person to paint Geronimo from life. Best known for his valiant and prolonged resistance to U.S. Government troops, Geronimo finally surrendered in 1886. Geronimo and his fellow Chiricahua Apache were initially sent to Florida, then Alabama, before being sent to Fort Sill in Oklahoma Territory. Geronimo was held at Fort Sill until his death in 1909. Dimensions: 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches
