작품 상세

A splendid signed c.1970 argillite "Raven and Sun" piece carved by the late Skidegate-born Haida-Gwaii artist, Patrick McGuire (Canadian, 1943-1970), during the final year of his short life. Argillite carvings are highly prized works of Indigenous Northwest Coast art, created exclusively by Haida artists. The tradition began in the 1820s in response to trade with European explorers and has since evolved into a significant cultural expression. The carvings often depict traditional Haida symbols and figures, such as the raven, sun, or bear, as seen in the intricate design of the object in the image. These pieces are sought after by collectors and museums worldwide and the market for argillite art has grown considerably in recent times. Light surface abrasions, as photographed. Measures approximately 2.75" x 1" x 5.75" tall.
