"Madonna con Bambinoâ signed high at right Alceo Dossenaâ Alceo Dossena: (1878-1937) Dossena didnât faked voluntarily antiques sculptures but he was so skilled in the use of Greek and renaissance masters techniques that many works made by him have been bought by unconscious collectors and museums administrators, certain that the works be authentic. In 1922 the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston paid 100.000 USD for the marble grave of a rich Italian lady, Maria Caterina Savelli, dead in 1430. The tomb was presumptively done by a famous Florence artist named Mino da Fiesole, it was so beautiful that the museum exposed it just at the entrance of the building. Nobody realized it was a fake until 1928 when an obscure Italian sculptor, Alceo Dossena, summoned the gallerist Alfredo Fasoli claiming 66.000,00 USD assuming that without his permission, Fasoli had sold that one and other works of his own as authentic. Since the twenties in fact his âhandiworksâ were present in the market cheating experts, studiouses and around 1936-37 (Parsons, 1962) made a Diana the hunter that was bought in 1952 by the City Art Museum of Saint Louis at a price of 56.000 USD, being it considered an Etrurian art piece. Two fraudulent merchants got rich by selling Dossenaâs fakes while the genial artist was so poor that he didnât had the money to pay his wife funeral, nor he was helped by his fellows. To get a revenge he openly said he was the author of the faked works but none would have believed it if he hadnât brought in Court drawings and pictures as proves of his counterfeited works. Dossena was subsequently persecuted in Court but he was declared innocent because everything had been done at his back. Hundreds were the works coutefieted, the Cleveland Museum of Art had been particularly affected by these events, and when they found contemporary nails inside a âVirgin with babyâ allegedly of the XIII century, it replaced it with a marble statue of Athena, soon after revealed to be another work of Dossena. After the trial Dossenaâs works obtained a lot of interest, allowing him to start a new career as a legitimate artist.
