Our Lady of El Rocío (Virgen del Rocío) Triana, Seville, Spain Height: 63 cm (≈ 24.80 in) | Width: 42 cm (≈ 16.54 in) | Depth: 11.5 cm (≈ 4.53 in) This large, brightly glazed ceramic sculpture or wall plaque depicts Our Lady of El Rocío (Virgen del Rocío or "Madonna of the Dew"), a revered religious icon in Andalusia, Spain. The work is characteristic of the ceramic tradition from the Triana district of Seville, known worldwide for its vibrant colours and elaborate azulejo (tile) production. The composition follows the traditional representation of the Virgen del Rocío, known affectionately as the "Blanca Paloma" (White Dove). The Virgin Mary is shown enthroned, holding the Christ Child in her lap. Both figures are lavishly crowned, with the Virgin's crown being particularly detailed and ornate, sculpted in high relief. The Virgin's mantle is exaggeratedly flared, emphasizing her majestic role, and she is set against a distinctive backdrop that features a large scallop shell, a classic symbol often associated with pilgrimage (especially the Way of St. James, or Camino de Santiago) and the Virgin Mary as a protective patron. The base of the sculpture includes small doves or white birds, directly referencing her popular name, "White Dove." The entire piece is rendered in a folk-art style, characterized by bold primary colours—deep blue for the borders, bright yellow for the inner mandorla/halo, and pinks and whites for the faces and garments—all finished with a glossy glaze. This devotional piece is a tangible link to the deeply rooted religious culture of southern Spain and the distinguished ceramic craftsmanship of Seville. XXth Century.
