Cooee Art Indigenous Fine Art Auction "In this work, the artist has painted the country around her homelands at Kunawarritji (Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route), a place associated with the Minyipuru Jukurrpa (Seven Sisters Dreaming), where she lived a traditional nomadic life until her early twenties. Wompi first encountered white men who drove cattle along the route, and as a young women followed the drovers north to Balgo Mission, where she remained for many years and learned to paint with her close friend, the famous artist Eubena Nampitjin. In Balgo, she cooked bread at the bakery and tended to the goats. This is also where she met her husband, the brother of fellow artist Lucy Yukenbarri. She returned to Kunawarritji during the last decade of her life, where she lived and painted until her death in 2017. This painting portrays Lukarkulu, a place where the artist would collect bush tucker when she was young. Bush tucker continues to be regularly eaten by Martu people, making up about half their diet. Martu regularly hunt Marlu (plain kangaroo), kirti-kirti (hill kangaroo), various species of goanna including parngarra, bush turkey (kipara) and camel. Smaller creatures such as wuukarta (honey ants) and lungki (witchetty grubs) are a highly sought after delicacy. Plant species are also collected as food, and often appear in Martu artwork. Fruits and vegetables gathered include jinjiwirrl (seed), quandong, warmula (bush tomato), kakula (bush cucumber), and minyarra (bush onions). Wompi's work oscillates between intricate tracings of familiar country and painterly strokes of bold colour. Stories of spirit men, spirit dogs and love magic reverberate in paintings full of charm and beauty.+IB0 Contact Cooee Art for more information on this Aboriginal artwork.
