Democratic Republic of the Congo This is a fine example of an early kabeja. These were used in ancestral and fertility rites, functioning in the duality of male and female ancestors. The figure, once it was magically charged, would promote equilibrium and harmony between both men and women, as well as between the living and their ancestors. Cf.
