작품 상세

A VIKING SILVER CUFF RING, CIRCA 9TH–10TH CENTURY A.D. Boldly hammered from a broad sheet of silver, this imposing cuff ring is distinguished by its expansive, gently arched face and pronounced taper towards the rear opening. The wide bezel-like front dominates the silhouette, curving confidently around the finger, while the shank narrows and remains open at the back for ease of wear. The metal carries a deep, softly variegated patina, settling into the ornament and enhancing the sculptural clarity of the design. The frontal panel is richly decorated in low relief with a disciplined geometric arrangement organised in horizontal registers. Rows of hourglass motifs alternate with circular bosses and raised linear bands, creating a structured and architectonic composition. The hourglass forms, crisply defined and evenly spaced, introduce a dynamic counterpoint to the rounded discs that flank them. Between these registers, ridged bands and narrow beaded lines articulate the surface, lending texture and a subtle play of light across the convex face. Traces of gilding survive within recessed areas, providing a warm contrast to the cooler tone of the silver and suggesting an original, more sumptuous appearance. The interior is smooth and gently concave, shaped for comfort against the finger, the silver faintly burnished by wear. The open construction of the rear allows a degree of flexibility, while the substantial thickness of the band ensures structural integrity. The ring’s breadth provided an ample field for ornament, transforming the precious metal into a miniature architectural façade. In Viking society, rings of this commanding type functioned as potent markers of identity and status. Their material value alone conveyed wealth, while the disciplined geometry of their decoration reflected a shared aesthetic rooted in order, repetition, and symbolic resonance. Such a ring would have served not only as personal adornment but also as a visible assertion of prosperity and affiliation. Impressive in scale and intricately worked, this cuff ring exemplifies the refined power of Viking silverwork, uniting mass, ornament, and intrinsic worth in a single, authoritative object.
