작품 상세
A VIKING SILVER CHOKER NECKLACE, CIRCA 9TH–10TH CENTURY A.D. Formed from a single robust rod of silver, this striking Viking choker necklace is shaped into a near-complete circular hoop, its elegant simplicity animated by a finely detailed clasp. The body of the necklace is smooth and gently rounded, retaining a deep, time-softened patina that speaks to its considerable age and long burial. The terminals broaden and overlap to form an integral fastening element, each end carefully worked with subtle moulded bands and engraved ornament. The clasp section is enriched with incised and lightly modelled decoration, including stylised interlace and zoomorphic motifs characteristic of Viking artistic vocabulary. The restrained yet purposeful detailing provides a refined focal point against the otherwise clean, uninterrupted curve of the hoop. Silver neck-rings of this type were both adornment and declaration — symbols of status, wealth, and identity within the Viking world. Worn close to the neck, they conveyed prestige and could also function as portable wealth, easily exchanged or divided if necessary. The harmonious balance between solid form and intricate terminal work reflects the skilled craftsmanship of Norse metalworkers during the height of the Viking Age. Diameter: 13.5 cm Weight: 64 g
