작품 상세
A VIKING SILVER RING, CIRCA 9TH–10TH CENTURY A.D. Of weighty and purposeful presence, this silver ring is formed as a broad, gently tapering hoop of substantial gauge, its silhouette defined by a softly faceted exterior and a subtly irregular interior contour that speaks to its hand-forged origin. The metal bears a deep, time-softened patina, its cool surface animated by the interplay of raised ornament and recessed ground. Solid yet restrained, the ring possesses the quiet authority characteristic of Viking personal adornment. The exterior is encircled by a continuous band of stamped triangular motifs, each triangle filled with a cluster of carefully punched pellets. These repeating forms create a rhythmic procession around the hoop, alternating in orientation to produce a dynamic zigzag pattern. A raised medial ridge divides the composition horizontally, lending structure and visual tension to the design. The crisp geometry of the triangles contrasts with the rounded punch-marks within them, creating a tactile surface that would have caught and scattered light with every movement of the hand. The ring is forged from a single band of silver, the seam subtly integrated into the overall form. Its interior remains largely unadorned, emphasising the strength and integrity of the metal itself. Such rings were worn directly upon the finger and may also have functioned as compact expressions of portable wealth. In Viking society, silver jewellery served not merely as ornament but as a store of value, easily exchanged, gifted, or cut into pieces in accordance with weight-based economies. Geometric ornament of this kind reflects the broader aesthetic language of the Viking Age, in which repetition, symmetry, and disciplined patterning conveyed both craftsmanship and identity. The triangular motifs, arranged in disciplined succession, evoke the visual vocabulary seen in metalwork, weapon fittings, and textile design across the Scandinavian world. At once personal adornment and material wealth, the ring stands as a succinct emblem of status, mobility, and cultural expression in the Norse world. Diameter: 2 cm Weight: 9 g
