STAUNTON, VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JARS / CROCKS, LOT OF THREE, salt-glazed with Albany-slip glazed interior, comprising an approximately half-gallon capacity canner with grooved wax-seal rim and two wide-mouth approximately one-gallon capacity examples with squared rims including one having additional incised shoulder ring. Each having stenciled cobalt designs including "LIPSCOMB & / SOMERVILLE, / STAUNTON, Va." and one wide-mouth example with additional stenciled decorative ornament. 1876-1882. 8 3/8" HOA. Catalogue Note: John Sinclair Lipscomb (1836-1907) and Curran B. Somerville (1846-1930) opened their merchant business in Staunton, VA in 1876. The store sold a wide variety of goods, including assorted household items and appliances, pottery, stoneware, Rockingham and Yellowware, silver-plated items, and metal piping. By 1882, the pair separated and a new firm was established, C.B. Somerville & Co.
