STAUNTON, VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JARS, LOT OF TWO, salt-glazed with Albany-slip interior, comprising a designated one-gallon capacity jar, cylindrical form with slight shoulder, flat-top rounded rim, and beaded neck and an approximately half-gallon capacity canner, cylindrical form with grooved wax-seal rim. Each having stenciled cobalt "I. H. PLECKER. / STAUNTON, VA." with arrow between, and two horizontal spearpoints below, one having "1" capacity between points. Circa 1870. 8 3/8" H, 4 3/4" D rim and 9 7/8" H, 6 3/8" D rim. Catalogue Note: Jacob Howard Plecker was born in Augusta County in 1820. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army in the 62nd Regiment, Virginia Mounted Infantry. Plecker was listed on the 1860 and 1870 census records as a "merchant". He died in 1890 and was buried in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.
