STAMPED "MT. CRAWFORD VA.", SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE SPITTOON, salt-glazed, cylindrical form with tapered sides, cut-out hemispherical drain hole, and pronounced foot, straight cut-off lines to the base. Brushed cobalt flower on a stem with four leaves repeated three times around the body, with additional cobalt on the underside of the drain hole. The shop of George W. Duey (1831-1903) and James Madison Shinnick (1813-1881). 1870-1880. 4" H, 8 1/8" D base. Literature: Stamp as Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware, p. 52, fig. 62. Catalogue Note: Signed spittoons from Mt. Crawford are rare, and examples with outstanding decoration, such as this example, are extremely rare. The Solomon Bell style of decoration seen on the present example is an excellent representation of the influences James Shinnick brought from his time working in Strasburg.
