FINE & IMPORTANT SILVER & JEWELED BOOK BOX, C. 1880. Comprising a large and very fine German Renaissance-style silver and jeweled book box, by Imperial German Court Jeweler Heinrich Steenaerts, Aachen, circa 1880. The ebonized oak box of rectangular form with gadrooned banded base, each side panel set with silver-decorated plaques depicting animals and ribbon-tied fruit garlands, inlaid with engraved panels and set with shaped malachite and polished agate cabochons. The lid with beveled rim and set with large ornate silver hinges and centered with a silver medallion plaque depicting a bust portrait of Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Milan, within a chased silver border and flanked by decorative elements with songbirds amongst berry branches and two polished crystal cabochons. The front of the lid with ornately decorated silver gargoyle lock plate and marked H. Steenaerts, Aachen, .800, and with crescent moon and crown stamp. The interior lined in velvet. Width 18 inches, depth 13 inches, height 6.75 inches (45.5 × 33 × 17cm).
