The faces are hand-painted. One of the dolls bears a sewn label reading: “Near East Industries MADE IN ATHENS GREECE”. height: 20.5 to 26 cm. Near East Relief Industries in Greece was a program established by the Near East Relief organization, aiming to provide employment for thousands of refugee women in Athens and elsewhere. The women produced handicrafts—such as embroidery, weaving, and the now-famous dolls—which were sold internationally, offering them an income while showcasing Greek tradition. In 1930, the organization was renamed the Near East Foundation.
