Jon Sarkin 1953-2024 Torn on 12" x 12" lp cover. Jon Sarkin - The man who HAD to create art. (April 27, 1953 - July 19, 2024) was an American outsider artist whose creative life began after a catastrophic medical event. A chiropractor by profession, his world changed in 1989 after surgery for tinnitus led to a massive stroke, rewiring his brain and leaving him with an obsessive drive to create art. From his Gloucester, Massachusetts studio, Sarkin produced dense, frenetic mindscapes filled with words, faces, symbols, and imagery often scrawled across found materials. His improvisational, layered style, equal parts comic book and stream-of-consciousness, became his distinctive visual language. Sarkin emerged as a central figure in outsider art, celebrated for the authenticity and compulsive force behind his creations. His works were widely published in outlets like The New Yorker and ARTnews, exhibited internationally, and even used for album art, bridging the gap between outsider expression and mainstream culture. His life story, chronicled in books and documentaries, highlighted the transformative power of art born from trauma. Even after his death, exhibitions and preservation efforts continue to cement his reputation as a visionary whose raw, prolific output expanded the possibilities of outsider art.
