Bronze sculpture and granite plinth Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010), German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Signed underneath "Wunderlich" Numbered "99/1250" Very good condition Overall dimensions: 37 x 14 x 13 cm   Paul Wunderlich who is mainly known for his graphic art, has chosen a well-known motive for his bronze sculpture: The Odalisque, painted by Ingres in 1814 and now shown in the Louvre. This Odalisque lies with her back turned towards the beholder, looking at him seductively. Wunderlich has seized and abstracted this motive already more than once in his graphics. This voluptuous female body has been abstracted even further in the bronze. She is still sitting upright and her behind is still quite voluptuous but her legs are now shown as one pointy stele. Her upper body can only be recognized with much fantasy as the only resemblances are an implied bellybutton and her breasts. If one would not know the bronze's name it would be quite hard to recognize. Knowing the name, an automatic tension arises between what the beholder has perceived after a quick look and what is represented that has been deliberately planned by the artist. The sculpture has been produced in a limited edition. It has been cast by hand in the lost wax process at Fritz Albrecht in Altrandsberg, Germany. The sculpture is engraved underneath with the artist's signature, the edition number and the moulder's mark. The overall dimensions are 37 x 14 x 13 cm;  the dimensions of the plinth alone are 37 x 2 x 13 cm; the sculpture without the plinth measures 28 x 5 x 12 cm. Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010) Paul Wunderlich, a German painter, draughtsman, sculptor and printmaker predominantly depicted erotic figures. In 1947 he began his printmaking-studies at the Hamburg School of Art under Willi Tietze and Willem Grimm. After his studies he worked there as a lecturer and later as a professor, too. During this time he also printed for other artists, for example for Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka. Wunderlich was awarded numerous prizes during his lifetime.
