RARE COMMEMORATIVE BRONZE SCULPTURE - Lion Atop Ruined Sphinx, by Prosper Lecourtier (FR, 1855-1924), on granite plinth w plaque for 1924 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race victory by Belgian Ernest Demuyter, which reads "Enest Demuyter, Gagnant de la Coupe Gordon Bennett, Gand 22 Juillet, 1924". The Gordon Bennet Race, named after the millionaire sponsor and owner of the 'New York Herald', began in 1906 and is the world's oldest gas balloon race, running 1906-1914/1919-39/1983-pres. Demuyter was a legend, winning six times, 1920, 22-24, 36-37. 19" x 23" x 9". The bronze isa not attached to the base. Presentation plaque is scuffed. From a California collector.
