OLIN LEVI WARNER (American, 1844-1896) Portrait Bust of Peggy Cottier, 1890 Bronze with brown patina 21 inches (53.3 cm) high Inscribed and stamped with foundry mark on base: To Peggy Cottier / on her wedding day / Olin L. Warner / 1890 / JNO Williams / Bronze Foundry. NY. FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST This portrait bust documents an important association in the life and career of sculptor Olin Levi Warner. After training in Paris under Jouffroy and Carpeaux, Warner returned to the United States where he had a difficult time starting his career in New York. After he returned to the family farm in Vermont, and worked for manufacturers of silver and plated ware as well as makers of mantel ornaments, he managed to attract the attention of Scottish-born Daniel Cottier of the Cottier Art Galleries of New York, an enthusiastic promoter of sculpture, glass and all things associated with the Aesthetic Movement. Cottier, the father of Peggy Cottier who is the subject of this bust, exhibited Warner's work and secured him commissions which gradually earned him recognition.
