Stainless steel and lead on metal base USA, 1966 George Rickey (1907-2002) - American kinetic sculptor Numbered from original edition of 15 Signature incised into the steel along the base Numbered on top and base portion Dimensions: 10 3/8 x 12 ¼ x 3 in. (26.4 x 31.1 x 7.6 cm) Good condition Estimate: $15,000-$20,000 After Alexander Calder, George Rickey is best known for his monumental outdoor kinetic sculptures. The artist's background in engineering and wartime aircraft from his time in the military in the 1940s contributed to his Constructivist forms that respond aerodynamically to air currents. Ironically, one of the first pieces to enter an American museum, "Two Lines Temporal" was initially acquired after a viewing at Documenta III in Kassel, Germany in 1964. This tabletop kinetic sculpture, from 1966 was produced by Rickey who designated the first five in the edition of 15 to be sent to California to raise funds for the construction of the first cutting edge contemporary museum in Southern California, the Pasadena Museum, which opened in 1969. This example, edition #4/15 was sold by George Rickey's friend and dealer Betty Asher to the mother of the current owner. The George Rickey Foundation has confirmed the authenticity of this work. George Rickey (American, 1907-2002) Kinetic sculptor George Rickey was born in the United States and lived abroad where he studied painting until he served as a military engineer during WWII. Rickey's mechanical experience manifests in his steel constructions which focus more on movement patterns in reaction to wind instead of on the sculptural form itself. He has garnered numerous large scale public commissions and solo and group shows across the globe. His sculptures are included in collections at the Tate Gallery, London; Walker Art Center; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts Boston; J. Paul Getty Museum; MOCA, Los Angeles; and Kunsthalle der Stadt, Germany among numerous others. Condition Minor scuffs to the base. A few minor places of discoloration and oxidation to the steel, as to be expected. In overall good condition. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
