After an apprenticeship as a belt maker and chaser, he began studying at the Munich Art Academy in 1943. 1946 - 1953 he studied sculpture in Vienna at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Fritz Wotruba. 1953 -1969 Heidel created numerous sculptures for the city of Vienna (Vienna municipal buildings). The bronze sculpture "Goat" in the Georg-Emmerling-Hof triggered a public debate. The goat was perceived as emaciated. 1963 Transition from figurative and animal sculptures to geometric sculptures. From 1975 Heidel worked as a restorer at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Member of the Secession from 1954. 1962 Prize of the City of Vienna for Fine Arts for sculpture.
