Chiparus (Dorohoi, Romania 1888 - 1947 Paris), "Russian Dancer", circa 1920's cast bronze with a good brown patina. Signed on the plinth with a copper plaque reading "Bronze Garanti Paris, JB deposée" and numbered laterally "1236." The work is mounted on a cubic black marble base with a square base plate. History: This piece commemorates the Russian Ballets, which were founded in St. Petersburg in 1910 and became one of the great stage successes until 1930. Chiparus, a Franco-Romanian sculptor and leading representative of Art Deco, studied with R. Romanelli at the Academy of Florence (1909-12) and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1912-14). He frequently depicted dancers from Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes."
